Limits On Entries

A move to allow more runners entry into the New Zealand cross-country championships was rejected on Saturday evening by the annual conference of harrier delegates attending the national championships in Rotorua. The conference, whose recommendations go to the mariagement committee of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, comfortably defeated the move, included in a remit moved by Waikato and seconded by Auckland.

The remit sought the changing of the association’s rules so that there be no restriction on entry, but that centre selectors impose reasonable limits in making nominations from centres.

At present, each centre is restricted to eight runners, with the first four to count in the teams’ race.

It was argued that the present system had been quite satisfactory in the 65 years of the championships. A remit that the New Zealand team to the world harrier championships in Scotland next March be increased from seven to nine will be referred to the national association.
