Notification of this has been given by the architects, Warren and Mahoney, and the consulting engineers, Maindonald and Associates. The six-week tendering period for building contractors is expected to begin about the end of the month; and the period of three weeks and a half for services and electrical contractors, before the middle of September. The cost of the project is estimated at more than s2m; the time for completion of the work is three years. A bond of $250,000 will be required. Applications will be considered only from substantial firms already established in New Zealand.
The project is a complex of buildings with a gross floor area of about 91,000 sq. ft. It comprises a town hall audi-
torium (seating 2900, including a choir of 400), a theatre - concert chamber (800), banquet room (500), and entrance foyers, restaurant, meeting rooms and kitchen block.
The construction Is principally in situ concrete, with pre-cast concrete floors and roof decking, and exposed aggregate wall panels. The main roofs have steel trusses. The chairman of the Town Hall Committee (Cr H. G. Hay) said last night that notification of tenders would be advertised in New Zealand’s main centres. It was expected to create considerable interest among major building firms.
Cr Hay said tenders for demolition of buildings on the site would be called separately, probably towards the end of the month.
