Five Men Arrested After Burglaries

Christchurch detectives yesterday arrested five men on charges relating to the recent burglaries of jewellers’ shops in Christchurch.

The detectives yesterday took 138 watches from a house outside Christchurch. The watches are alleged to have been stolen from two of the jewellers’ shops. One of the men, arrested yesterday morning, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court in the afternoon with receiving. The four arrested last evening will appear in the Magistrate’s Court today on charges of burglary and receiving. Four bouses in Christchurch were searched by detectives yesterday.

The value of the watches recovered is more than $4OOO. The five men were arrested by Detectives D. N. Stewart, B. A. Ramsay, L. E. Foster, B. W. Lester and J. A. Ell. Some of the detectives had worked for 39 hours in the 48 hours to 10.30 p.m. yesterday. Fifteen detectives were involved in the inquiries, not yet completed.
