Riders Heavily Handicapped
Light to moderate northerly winds have been forecast for today, and unless they increase in strength, a longhandicapped rider should win the Ashburton-to-Christchurch 50-mile cycling race. Not only do the limit riders, A. F. Johnson and A. Boutery, have 70min starts, but off 55min is a bunch pf five. It includes four veterans, C. W, Leppens, W. J. H.
Wood, G. McGregor, and P. M. Fuller, whose total age is about 170, and the young rider, K. Page. The years of accumulated wisdom by the first four could well lead them through to the front and victory. Ten minutes behind them are three young riders, G. V. Ravenwood, J. C. Burtt and J. E. Gurr, but they could find the gap a little difficult to bridge.
Unrealistic handicapping
has probably deprived the four scratch riders of any chance of winning fastest time. They are B. G. Stockwell, R. K. Anderson, M. W. Litolff, ahd G. R. Sword, a strong quartet, but hardly likely to gain much, if anything, on the seven-strong break bunch off 3min. Accordingly, the fastest time should come from someone in this bunch, with P. A. Skilling, W. W. Thorpe and A. J. Hood the likeliest
