FENCING OF DEER FARM

Lincoln College Specification

Deer farms in New Zealand must be fenced to a nominal height of 6Jft to conform to specifications laid down by the Forest Service. Of this height, 6ft must consist of fabricated netting, with the longitudinal wires, commonly called line wires, made from 12J gauge galvanised high-tensile wire. These line wires although much lighter in weight, have the equivalent breaking strain of conventional 8 gauge fencing wire. Above the netting there must be two plain wires, each 3in apart, also high tensile. The fencing and gates for the experimental deer farm at Lincoln College Incorporate netting which exceeds the Forest Service specification, as does the whole fence. The fence was specially made for the project by Cyclone Industries (N.Z.), Ltd, in its Christchurch factory. In designing a suitable netting to conform to the Forest Service specification the company had to bear in mind the cost and weight factors of a netting 6ft high. The lower half of the netting has seven line wires to the conventional spacings of a standard seven-wire farm fence.

Above three feet are four line wires with a proportionate increase in the spacing, although there is only a gap of 3in between the two top wires. This, combined with the single stay wire running unbroken from top to bottom for the full 6ft height, is designed to give the maximum possible rigidity.

The stay wires are spaced every foot along the entire length of the fences. The netting can be produced with stay wires spaced down to 6in apart.
