LABORATORY OPENED

General Motors has opened a new safety research laboratory at its Milford proving ground in the United States. The proving ground itself was started in 1924, and the company has already been staging about 400 car crashes a year for safety investigations.

The new laboratory is expected to speed analysis of crash results, and permit even more crashes to be staged. It takes about 40 man-hours to prepare a vehicle for crashtesting and install the necessary instruments. Another new facility at the proving grounds is a large paved area—said to be the size of 59 football fields—on which high-speed crashes can be staged.
