(From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT. After a loss of $10,199 the previous season, the Westport Jockey Club accounts show a profit of $4007 for the year ending next Monday, according to the President (Mr J. C. Craig) in his annual report. “However, we must be realistic and have a good look at how this profit came about after such a large loss last season. “Firstly, our payout from the T.A.B. of $9987 which was earned last season was actually received this season. Secondly, your committee ran a raffle through the season, and to date $2012 has been credited to our account. It is due to these items that we were able to end the season on such a healthy note. “For some years now. most clubs, at their annual meeting have referred to the necessity for some form of taxation relief. The glaring example of this is shown through your committee having to run a raffle to supplement the finances of the club.

“Last year at the annual meeting of the racing conference. a remit to delete trots from racing clubs' programmes was successful, in spite of objections from most South Island and some North Island clubs.

“Unfortunately, we were the first club to race under the new rule and were unable to fill eight races. This, in conjunction with the trots being deleted and wet weather, were responsible for the poor support received for the October meeting. '

“After analysing the small turnover for this meeting and taking into account the loss sustained last season, the committee considered it would be better to forgo the two February race days for 1968. This decision I am sure, was a wise one/’
