RACING Ruakiwi Lass Picked To Win Tomorrow

Winter Gup form will practically assure Free Pass and Ruakiwi Lass of the heaviest backing for the Canterbury Jockey Club’s T.A.B. concession double tomorrow.

Free Pass, the Winter Cup winner and top-weight with 8-10, will attempt the longer Islington Handicap under 9-4.

Ruakiwi Lass, a stronglyfinishing second in the Winter Cup under 8-5. has topweight of 9-0 in the August Handicap, in which the scale is 71b higher. Free Pass was just beaten by Roganne over a middle distance in the Taumarunui Cup a week before his Winter Cup victory. Having established his versatility as regards distances it only remains to be seen if he can come up with one of his best gallops on a track that might be firmer than the ones that have shown him to best advantage. Good Run Carpenter's good run for sixth in the Winter Cup; placed runs by Lucky Rebel and Chiave d’Oro in the Heathcote Handicap on Tuesday; two good performances by His Lordship at the meeting should also have a bearing on the Islington Handicap. Carpenter has seldom failed to race well on past campaigns at middle distances at Riccarton and his strong run for sixth in the Winter Cup—he was the South Island’s best in the race—showed that this veteran is wearing well. Lucky Rebel and Chiave d’Oro were no match for Mammoth in Tuesday's Heathcote Handicap, and they did not look much if at all superior to His Lordship, which was fifth. His Lordship was one of the slowest away and was held up for vital seconds in the running when goin’ well. He will be ridden again by G. L. Willetts, who, as rider of Ruakiwi Lass, has prospects even brighter in the August Handicap. Second Leg Ruakiwi Lass has settled and thrived since her bold run for second in the Winter Cup, and her finish should be hard to match in a field weaker than the one she met on the first day of the meeting. Barclay should be another strong representative for the North Island now that a firmish track seems certain. He failed in the Paparua Handicap last Saturday but came up with a good run on better footing on Tuesday when he ran fourth in the Selwyn Handicap, won by Bompa. The South Island’s best will probably be Pharasal, Beau Supreme, Billy Joe, and Capasco.

Pharasal is a newcomer at the Grand National meeting, but started a fresh campaign encouragingly with a fourth in the Brabazon Handicap last Saturday week. Beau Supreme has raced twice at the meeting for two fourths, and Billy Joe's two

runs have produced as many thirds, the latest in the Sei. wyn Handicap in which Bompa beat him by less than a length. Capasco was seventh but close to the placed horses in the Paparua Handicap last Saturday. He won impressively over a mile at Washdyke at his previous start Fields, with form, for doubles races.— FIRST LEG OF ON-COURSE DOUBLE 11.15 a.m.— STYX HACK HURDLES $1200; Ifm and 60yds.
