STRAIN ON SCHOOL

Problems At Burnside

Burnside High School was under great strain helping meet the needs of the district and the Education Department’s assistance should be liberal, the headmaster (Mr C. Cross) said at a meeting of the board of governors last evening. Third-form enrolments for 1969 were 336, which meant 36 extra pupils. The need for an extra form with the attendant pressure on accommodation caused apprehension to himself and the staff, Mr Cross said. Extension of the staff workroom was essential—provision for the staff at present was “hopeless,” he said. The staff workroom was now half the original space provided in 1960, and three times the present space would be reasonable. Present needs, and the critical situation which would arise when any building extensions took place in the main quadrangle, called for a prompt investigation of carparking, Mr Cross said. There was no real provision for parking in the school at all.

The board decided to approach the Education Department on the question of the staff workroom and parking areas.
