Freight Talks Suspended

(N.Z.PA. Staff Correspondent! LONDON, July 11. The New Zealand producer boards and the British Conference Lines tonight announced suspension of the annual freight rate negotiations until September. The abrupt decision came after the third session of talks. No reason was given. The statement read: ‘The New Zealand producer boards and the British lines have mutually agreed to suspend until September further discussion on rates of freight to apply for the 1968-69 season.”

Neither Sir John Ormond, chairman of the Exports and Shipping Council, nor Mr C. A. Dawes, chairman of the Tonnage Committee, were prepared to elaborate on the statement. Sir John Ormond said he was satisfied that suspension of the negotiations until September would not affect the trade as this season’s peak had virtually passed and the next season did not begin until October Neither chairman was prepared to predict where the resumed talks would be held. This could be either London or Wellington.
