Broadcasting

Accounts Sir, —Because “A. B. Cedarian” thinks broadcasting is cheap is no reason for wasting money on the N.Z.B.C. Symphony Orchestra,

which a paternal oligarchy thinks is a nourishing hunk of culture for us. It is-illogi-cal for the orchestra to be a charge on television licence fees, while all the activities of the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council depend on the economic vicissitudes of gambling and other hand-outs. I object even more strongly to the half million dollar subsidy supporting advertisers whose activities grow more objectionable as senescent commercial radio stoops lower and lower to woo their accounts. After years of deficits, the “Listener” shows a tiny surplus, but only by reducing quality and increasing the price of a commodity for which purchasers must find half a million dollars annually because programme information is withheld by selfish copyright.—Yours, etc., VARIAN J. WILSON. July 10, 1968.
