Limpkin

Sir, —On page 18 this morning you print a photograph of a “speckled water-hen.” The proper name of the species is limpkin. I have never heard it called a speckled water-hen. The coots and gallinules, the latter similar to New Zealand’s pukaki, are often referred to as swamp-hens or mud-hens, but the limpkin, with its long legs, neck, and bill, shows its close relationship to the herons and ibises, and there seems no appropriate reason for the name given by the American suppliers of the photograph.— Yours, etc., H. D. SKINNER. July 10, 1968.
