CATHEDRAL SPIRE

New Cross And Ball The heavy iron cross and ball on the spire of Christchurch Cathedral will be replaced with polished stainless-steel replicas. The new cross, about onethird the weight of the old one, will cost $133 and the ball $4OO. A Christchurch firm has started to make the cross and ball, and both will be ready in about a fortnight. Announcing this yesterday, the consulting engineer for the work (Mr E. G. S. Powell) said the decision to make a new cross and ball had been based on the need for a much lighter metal to prevent movement and the great difficulty in handling the old pieces, which weighed more than 2001 b. Mr Powell said that several other churches in Christchurch had stainless-steel crosses. They looked well and resisted the weather better than iron.

The total cost of the work is expected to be about $lOOO, more than half of which will be spent on new materials. The Cathedral Chapter is, hoping that donations will offset the cost.
