Pedigree Pigs Hard To Sell

Reflecting the depressed market for fat pigs over recent months, values were back by almost 30 per cent on last year when the Canterbury branch of the Pig Breeders’ Association held its annual show and sale of pedigree stock at the Addington Show grounds yesterday.

Landrace pigs met a steady Inquiry, and there was also a fair demand for Large White sows, but most of the Large White gilts and boars were passed. Some of the better-estab-lished breeders obtained regular sales, but for others it was frequently a case of “passed, no bid,” as their lots came up for auction. However, a number of sales were made privately afterwards, prices generally being round the upset bid of S4O. Sixty-four lots, representing three breeds, were offered at the sale, but only 31 found buyers at auction. The average price was $62.45. compared with $B9 for 63 sold last year. From the outset it was clear that vendors returns would be well back on last sale —in spite of the recent lift in the baconer market. Large Whites, with an entry of 45 lots, made up most of the offering. Of the 24 in-pig sows offered. 16 were sold under the hammer for an average of s62—a drop of $49.50 on last vear. Top price was $95 (sl9o last year) for an entry from H J. Hurford and Son. of Irwell. which had earlier been judged the supreme champion pig on show. Two sales at $BO were made by A. A. Mann, of Oamaru. No Inquiry Large White gilts met practically no inquiry, only one of the 12’lots being sold at auction, and only three of the nine Large White boars were sold. Top price was $72.50 ($l7O last vear) for one of four offered on account of J. F. Miller and Sons, of Motukarara. It had been placed second in its class.

Onlv two Landrace sows were offered, the first realising $lOO. It was offered on account of T. S. Chappell, of Killinchy. and the price represented a drop of >7O on his top-priced sow last year. The other Landrace sow was passed. Eight of 12 Landrace • boars were sold, top price again being obtained by Mr Chappell with one at $lOO. Top price last year was $135.

The boars returned an average of $69.50, and taking the sow into account, the average for the Landrace section was almost $73, compared with $lO2 last year. , Three Wessex Saddleback sows and two boars were offered, and two of the sows were sold for $45 and $4l.
