Chair Ban Lifted

The black ban on the chair of philosophy at the University of Tasmania, Hobart, has been lifted. Christchurch members of the Australasian Association of Philosophy, which imposed the ban, said: “It was just lifted or else It just died—it io so long ago.” The chair has been vacant for 12 years since Professor S. S. Orr was dismissed for alleged misconduct with a girl student. There were 10 years of legal proceedings before a settlement was reached in 1966. Throughout this period philosophers in Australia,

New Zealand, and other countries overseas declined to apply for Professor Orr’s post because they thought the University of Tasmania acted wrongly. Now that the dust has settled, fresh attempts have been made to' fill the appointment and it has been’ offered to Dr D. W. Joske,. senior lecturer in philosophy at Monash University, Melbourne. It is expected that he will be confirmed in the post Little Interest in the position has been shown by New Zealanders because memories of the ban lingered.
