Price Control

Sir, —Spokesmen for Labour who say that Government refusal of their request to control rising prices in 1966 has resulted in a freeze at the high price have a valid point. 1 am not sure off-hand of the price of kerosene in 1966. A year ago it war 2s 6d. 1 now pay 35 cents. My supplier tells me that this is the way the oil companies skirt round the petrol ceiling. This cruder fluid is not worth an amount almost approaching the gallon price of standard petrol. It annoys the person who bought this type of heater to avoid higher electricity charges. Has my informant the correct story? Is this commercial behaviour a fair pop? —Yours, etc., RAW SPIRIT. June 24, 1968. [The Christchurch office of the Industries and Commerce Department says it will be happy to discuss the complaint with the correspondent if it is given more details.]
