Inter-Island Ferries

Sir, —References to delays to Cook Strait cargoes impelled me to point out again the causes of what could be a national disaster. Your article mentioned delays to wheat shipments by fitting shifting boards, repairs to the Aranui, stop-work meetings, and loss of the Wahine. All these causes could easily be repeated, but let us for a moment imagine we are in a state of war again. The Wahine and Maori are very easy targets and would be sunk; then a

couple of shots to bring down the railway bridge at the Clarence River and we have complete immobilisation of all cargo traffic between the two islands. Natural disasters such as earthquake could do very much the same. The virtual elimination of coastal cargo vessels as a policy seemingly pursued by government departments is short-sighted, dangerous, and indicative of irresponsible thinking. Yours, etc., W. J. GRIME. Raumati Beach, July 9, 1968.
