Maori players in Rugby league
The Interests of Maori Rugby league players will be the prime concern of a Canterbury Maoris board of control which will be elected at a meeting at the Show Grounds this evening. The board, which will be affiliated to the New Zealand Maori board of control, will be attempting to raise the standard of the annual Maori-Pakeha game. In contrast with Auckland, where the clash between the
Maoris and pakehas is considered one of the major attractions each season, the Canterbury equivalent is regarded as little more than a minor Sunday fixture to be played on one of the country grounds. Because the game is seldom a Canterbury trial and has no trophy at stake, players have little interest m taking part and consequently numerous withdrawals affect the standard.
