Cycling success
The Papanui cycling team, which won the distinction of New Zealand’s premier club side at Levin on Saturday, aimed for a time of 56min for the 25 miles teams’ time trial. But during the race this was amended to 58min as it became obvious that it would be good enough to win in the blustery conditions, the coach and manager of the team, Mr W. W. Thorpe, said yesterday.
Mr Thorpe said the team Improved a great deal from the Canterbury final, and he was especially pleased with the performances of the two 17-year-olds, R. K. Anderson and B. R. Chisholm. Also, he said, although G. J. Day had been dropped, he finished only Bmin behind the team and was caught only four miles from the finish by Counties (Auckland), which started after Papanui.
Because of the youth of the team—the average age of the five, and their manager, is only 19} —‘‘the incentive is certainly there to try and win again next year,” said Mr Thorpe.
