Lake Power Failures

Numerous power failures had been caused during the last month by swans flying into power lines round Lake Ellesmere, the engineer-man-ager (Mr S. E. Slatter) told the Central Canterbury Electric Power Board yesterday. “There is, apparently, less natural food available this year,” he said. “Some years ago a similar predicament arose when swans, in a weakened condition, flew into the lines.”

Mr Slatter said that special switch-gear would be fitted in some areas to reduce the incidence of power breaks, and quotations had been sought for covered conductors. “This is a matter of concern and expense for the board,” said the chairman (Mr T. F. Carter). “The Acclimatisation Society should try to kill the swans off or take more eggs next season. Federated Farmers is taking it up.” Mr L. P. Manion said that if shooters were given easier access to the lake they would kill more swans. Mr Slatter said that gorsecutting operations cut the power at Greendale for 35 minutes on June 26, three broiler chicken farms being among those to lose power. The operator of the gdrsecutter would be charged with the costs of repairs.
