University Well Placed In Inter-Club Squash

X dose contest, won by Christchurch I from Collegiate by the odd game after matches were even, was the feature of the latest round of. the Division One squash rackets tournament last evening. University defeated Officers, 3-1, to gain eight points, which brings 4t Into a strong position to challenge Collegiate tor the lead as next week. Collegiate has the bye. Points are: Collegiate 34, University* 10, Christchurch 13. Officers 12, Christchurch I 12. Canterbury’s top player. J. C. Foulds (Collegiate), again had to'face a detemlned’challenge. B. V. Hamilton'(Christchurch I), knowing he had only to win one game to give his team victory, produced his < best' squash- to take tbe-first game, before being gradually drown into the pattern of a hard-drlvirig duel on Which Foulds thrives. 1 Hamilton was successful tn keeping,the. ball slow find controlled, displaying a decisive overhead, which won him many Points.,' His drop shots were tight, although as the match progressed he began to ’ play them all across court. Milne (Christchurch I) looked impressive; both made many errors and were sluggish in retrieving. Pine only occasionally showed glimpses’of his forceful driving and volleying, while Milne, except tor the seetnd game in

which he led 7-1, was greatly lacking in length. G. Hargreaves and N. W. Herd, for Christchurch I, and comfortable wins, both being in control of their matches. For University, R. M. Garrett was forced to four games by M, R. Blank (Officers), who won the third game from 5-all with a spate of winning drop shots which found the nick. Garrett, although still reluctant to volley, was generally in command of the match, his quickness to retrieve the seemingly hopeless situation, plus his backhand angled shot, making him a well-deserved winner. J. St J. Parson showed that he will be a strong contender for the New Zealand Universities team to play the South African Universities in August, by decisively beating G. C. B, Beadel. 3-0. Although Beadel extended him in the second game, Parson’s all-court play, combined with his speed, enabled him to outmanoeuvre the experienced Beadel.
