DECK CARGO OF PIPES
Sewer Work In Woolston
The first of 14,000 ft of 24in asbestos cement pipe for the Christchurch Drainage Board arrived at Lyttelton in the Hawea. The pipes are destined for a rising main from the Woolston industrial area—the main will carry industrial waste, and will prevent pollution of the Heathcote River.
The pipe was shipped from Auckland in packs of 16, these being carried on trailers on the deck of the Hawea, as they were too high to pass through the vessel’s stern door. They are also too big to pass through the Lyttelton tunnel and for this reason the packs will be broken down into units of four pipes before being taken through the tunnel. The pipes were made in Auckland by James Hardie and Company Proprietary, Ltd, and will be laid in Dyers Road.
