“Peasant-type Farming” From Subdivisions
“The situation is fareicaL We are watching good farming land being chopped up into 10-acre lots for peasanttype fanning,” said Cr J. E Mannering at the monthly meeting of the Eyre County Council.
The council was discussing the increasing practice of subdividing large blocks into 10acre sections. Mr L. E. Taylor, of Clarkville, had applied to divide 230 acres into 20 sections. The small sections were being used mainly for rural housing, and a lot of good farm land was going out of production, said Cr Mannering. The only way in which the council could stop a subdivision which complied with area requirements was on the grounds that it was a detrimental work, said the chairman (Mr C. M. Harman). Cr C. H. Tyson suggested that the council should institute toning in the county and then Impose a 50-acre minimum area for subdivisions. Housing Syndicate “What would happen if a syndicate bought 10 acres or more and filled the block with houses, which would be leased?” asked Cr Tyson. The situation was becoming progressively more chaotic, and he did not know who had the answer to the problem, said the chairman. Any subdivision of more than 10 acres did not have to eome before the council.
Except for the closelysettled eastern part of the county, over which an Interim zoning had been adopted,
most of the county Is not covered by planning zones. On the recommendation of its planning consultant (Miss Nancy Northcroft), the council decided to zone the balance of the county “rural.”
