Speculation In West Germany

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) BONN, July 9. General Albert Schnez, whose war-time record caused an outcry when he was proposed for a top N.A.T.O; appointment, will become commander of the West German Army, according to the news magazine, “Der Spiegel.” General Schnez gave up his candidature for the post of N.A.T.O. commander in Central Europe last November, because of Dutch opposition. A Ministry of Defence spokesman yesterday declined to comment on the report, describing it as “pure speculation.”

“Der Spiegel” reported that, despite suspicions that General Schnez had been a convicted Nazi, he would succeed Major-General Josef Moll as Inspector of the Army in October.
