ATHLETE FAILS
Decathlon Attempt (N Z.P A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON The British Olympic decathlon hope, P. Gabbett, has failed in his bid to achieve, the Games qualifying mark of I 7200 points. He had the consolation of setting a national record at Crystal Palace. Gabbett scored 7082 points for the 10 events to eclipse the 1966 mark held by D. Clarke. His performance also added almost 500 points to his previous best score. In a triple jump at the same meeting, the British record-holder, F. Alsop, beat the Olympic qualifying mark with a leap of 52ft 7in. D. Boosey has already qua-! lifted in this event.
