Tour Lead Unchanged

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) BORDEAUX. A Belgian, G. van den Berghe, retained the overall lead in the Tour of France cycle classic for the fifth successive day as the vigilance of race leaders again prevented any rider from making a clear break. The 85.5-mile ninth stage, from Royan to Bordeaux, the shortest stage of the tour, was won by another Belgian, W. Godefroot, who raced to the lead 100 yards from the line in a massive sprint round the Velodrome. Godefroot is known as one of the fastest sprinters among the 90 men still left in the tour, but B. Hoban (Britain), who would be the last man to call himself a sprinter, gave bin) a great battle as the riders hurtled off the banking on the last bend. For a time it looked as though W. In’tven (Belgium), H. Wilde (Germany), and J. Leblanc (France) might break the strangle-hold the favourites have had on the tour for four days.
