Supporters’ Club Offered Courts

The Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association cannot afford four new grass courts to be laid at Wilding Park, and these will be offered to the association’s supporters’ club if it pays for the cost of laying them. The management committee of the association decided this at its meeting last evening.

Mr B. Crofts proposed that the club be offered the courts, and said that it should also be given their sole use for five years, except on Saturdays.

Even with its Golden Kiwi grant of $4OO towards the cost, the association could not afford to lay the courts this

year; the full cost would be $l2OO, he said.

The committee agreed to advertise for an assistant to work with the present greenkeeper, Mr T. Paterson. Mr S. T. Day, chairman of the Wilding Park committee, said that two greenkeepers were the minimum necessary to keep the grounds in reasonable order. The assistant would be a young man who would be able to take over from Mr Paterson when he retired.

There are 87 nominations for the South Island coaching school. Mr R. B. Brown said that there would be no difficulty filling the 60 places in the school.
