Paparua Objections To Urban Fence Review
The Christchurch Regional Planning Authority’s proposals for extending the urban fence were criticised in a report to the Paparua County Council last evening, from its town-planning committee. The County Engineer (Mr A. Dyhrberg) criticised the proposal to exclude railway land between Buchanans Road and Carmen Road, and said that the proposed inclusion of the area between Buchanans Road and Roberts Road would interfere with its use for the disposal of freezing works wastes. Land north-west of the airport protection zone was suitable for urban uses be-
cause it was of low agricultural value and readily served by sewer and water, he said. The authority’s scheme should provide for the growth of Templeton and Prebbleton to economicsized units. Provisions in the review which would stop the establishment of rural industries in the special rural zone were very severe, said the committee chairman (Cr A. Y. Shuker). The council decided to object to aspects of the authority’s proposals as they affected the Halswell area, and Mr Dyhrberg was asked to prepare submissions in support of other objections. It was agreed that the council supported the preservation of good farm land, but had reservations on the inclusion of a major part of the rural section of the county in a special rural zone.
To consider the authority's proposal for a new urban centre with a population of 50,000 at West Melton, the town-planning committee was asked to arrange a special meeting.
