Lincoln College Hall For 120 Approved

(New Zealand Frees Association) WELLINGTON, July 8. Tenders will be called soon for a new hall of residence at Lincoln College and the Government has approved a $316,000 subsidy towards the cost of this accommodation for 120 students.

Announcing this today, the Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella) said: “Residential accommodation at Lincoln College is not capable of meeting the demands from the rapidly increasing roll, but the present proposal will

go some way towards meeting tiie need,” he said. Government approval for tenders to be called was recommended by the University Grants Committee. The new hall of residence at Lincoln is the first of a programme of university residential projects approved by the Government to be started this year.

“We are most grateful to the Government for this recognition of the part Lincoln College plays in the support and implementation of the national economy,” said the chairman of the Lincoln College Council (Mr J. K. McAlpine) last evening. “This hall will enable us to provide accommodation for an ever-increasing number of students who would otherwise be unable to attend This, in itself, must be of ultimate benefit to the whole country," he said. A few years ago Lincoln was almost totally residential, but now much less than 50 per cent could live in. This deterred some potentially valuable students from even trying to enter. The Government's generous, far-sighted, and timely contribution showed that it recognised agriculture as still the most important ingredient of the New Zealand economy, said Mr McAlpine. Adequate funds for this first hall would be available from the college’s residential halls appeal, Mr McAlpine said. Working drawings had been prepared and tenders would be called as soon as a few details were settled.
