Bottle Smashed On Youth’s Head

A big team of detectives worked throughout Saturday night questioning more than 40 persons after a youth was seriously injured when a beer bottle was smashed over his head at a party.

At 11.30 a.m. yesterday an 18-year-old Christchurch youth was arrested at the C.LB. office on a charge of injuring William Kenneth McFarlane in circumstances that had death occurred he would be guilty of manslaughter.

He will appear in the Magistrate’s Court this morning.

Leading Aircraftman McFarlane, whose home is in Nelson, and who is stationed at the R.N.Z.A.F. Station, Wigram, was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital suffering from serious head injuries late on Saturday evening. He was operated on in the early hours of yesterday and

was on the seriously ill list last evening.

The injured youth was attending a party at 6 Sylvan Street, Hlllmorton, and he was injured about 11.15 p.m. He was taken to hospital by car.

Detective Inspector M. T. Churches was called to take charge of the investigation at 1 a.m. yesterday. More than a dozen detectives were called on duty to assist in inquiries.
