SOCIETY OF ARTS

Exhibition By Associates

Amateur painting, now on show at the Canterbury Society of Arts Gallery in Gloucester Street, is very much “the mixture as before." The light, airy, comfortable surroundings of the new gallery are merciless in exposing bad painting, and mediocrity shouts as never before.

The trained, sensitive eye. the skill and professionalism revealed by the precise, considered shaping of, say, a beautifully designed door, are sadly lacking in the exhibits themselves.

It isn’t that people shouldn’t try to paint, to compose or play music; of course not, they should receive every help, kindness and encouragement Exhibiting immature painting is very unkind. As for the general public they can stay at home with their hi-fi. their art books, prints and reproductions and justifiably feel they’re not missing much.

These remarks are not directed at exhibitors—they deserve better—but against a policy which allows such large, unselected displays of amateur art to be presented as public, revenue-earning exhibitions.

The 300 catalogued works may be seen on the first and ground floors of the gallery at the usual hours, until July 14.—H.J.S.
