From Sport To Church

A former West Coast Rugby League representative who served as an officer with the Regular Army in Korea and Malaysia will be ordained to the priesthood by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. B. P. Ashby) on July 13. He is James Jeremy Meates, who joined the Franciscan Order in 1960. The fifth son in a well-known sporting family, he is a member of the Order of Friars Minor.

Two of his brothers, W. A. Meates and K. Meates, were All Blacks, and another, V. Meates, was a prominent league player. All six brothers have been representatives in either Rugby, cricket or league.
