NEW ATOMIC PROCESS

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter) TOKYO. The Japanese Atomic Research Institute has announced the success of a new technique it has developed for extracting plutonium 239 from used uranium fuel. The institute said the process was the result of 10 years research into engineering techniques for producing plutonium—which can be used as the fuel for atomic reactors or to make atom bombs. It said Japan would nevertheless probably buy a French technique for extracting plutonium for its first high-speed breeding reactors, as this would be cheaper than commercial development of the new method.
