Jumpers Active
Riccarton yesterday had something of the busy appearance of a lead-up to a Grand National meeting. Six horses schooled over fences on the trial steeplechase course. For live of them it was a trial for the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Haast Steeplechase next Tuesday. Silver Kingdom <R. Moir) and Lovely Clover <P. Daly) jumped eight fences. It was a display marred only by a somewhat erratic course followed by Lovely Clover in ducking away to the left after jumping the fourth fence, the boards. Lovely Clover lost some
ground in the process but caught Silver Kingdom before they finished at the brush double. Istan Light (K. Quayle) and Porgie (A. Swanson) started with Silver Kingdom and Lovely Clover, but pulled out after jumping three fences satisfactorily. Who Does earned a qualifying ticket for steeplechasing by jumping seven fences competently with Massakai (D. J. Strawbridge). Ridden by R. A. Williams, Who Does improved as the pace quickened and his final leap, at the second of the double, was one of his best.
