7000 Late With Returns
Only 6500 of 13,500 reconciliation statements due yesterday from employers have reached the Inland Revenue Department. The District Commissioner of Taxes (Mr C. K. Jones) said that the department would take steps to ensure that the situation did not develop as it did last year, when some statements were still outstanding in September. Vigorous action would be taken against employers who failed to return the statements in the next week. The department had received about 22,500 returns from salary and wage earners, of which 10,500 had been dealt with and rebates issued. Mr Jones said there were still 2300 land-tax returns due. These should have reached the department by March 31.
