U.S. Navy Base At Harewood

Sir, —In today's issue the United States Embassy’s public affairs officer states that “. . at no time was there envisaged any plans for a permanent facility by the United States Government at Christchurch.” Yet “The Press” reported on April 9 that “plans, are being prepared for making permanent the United States Navy’s advance headquarters at Christchurch Airport ... The Navy, hopes to have a permanent base at th* airport within the next 10 years. . . Construction of the base is expected to be financed by the Americans themselves ... the man responsible for all construction engineering at United States naval shore establishments in the Pacific (Rear-Admiral Heaman) will visit the base tomorrow." Which of these reports is correct? In other words, is Christ* church Airport to be developed as a first-class civil international airport in the interests of New Zealand, oris it to become an expendable United States military base in the South Pacific?—Yours, etc., PC May IS, 1968.
