Tiri To Be Workshop
(N.Z. Press Association)
WHANGAREI, May 13.
The 169-ton Tiri, New Zealand’s first pirate radio ship, is now in Whangarei, where she will be the workshop, store and floating base for a towing firm. Last January the Tiri was towed to Auckland after she had been aground on Great Barrier Island. This, was the end of the Tiri as a pirate radio ship. The Tiri was built in Auckland in 1931, and spent many years trading along the east coast and from Auckland to Manakau. Later she was a common sight in Whangarei as a coaster.
