R. TAIT’S TARGET
200 ft For Discus “The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. R. D. Tait, of Auckland, the national discus champion and record holder, will attempt to beat 200 ft this winter. The 19st Tait, who recently threw the discus 199 ft lOjin, has not set a date for the record attempt. But he is at present building up strength and the attempt will be made in the immediate future. Tait, who is almost certain to gain selection in the 1968 New Zealand Olympic Games team, wants to better the mark before leaving this country. “However, it is difficult to get officials at this time of the year though,” he added No application was made to ratify the 199 ft throw because there were insufficient off! cials and competitors and no printed programmes for the meeting at which the effort was made. Tait said that he had suffered several minor injuries during the summer. “If it wasn’t Olympic Games year 1 wouldn’t have competed throughout the last athletics season," he said. However, in spite of these handicaps, he is determined to reach his goal this year.
The 200 ft mark, bettered 'for the first time in the world in 1962, has never been passed in Australasia.
