Viet Cong Attacks On Saigon Continue
(N.Z.P.A. -Reuter —Copyright) SAIGON, May 12. Viet Cong troops launched fresh attacks today on Saigon’s northern fringes, and continued to hold out along the capital’s southern boundary.
As the Communists* new assault entered its second week, United States headquarters announced that the Viet Cong had paid a heavy price—nearly 4000 dead. Another 169 enemy bodies left from earlier fighting were reported to have been uncovered today. The Viet Cong forces aimed their main thrust today on
the two vital bridges northwest of Saigon that are the main links to the capital for both commercial and military traffic.
The Viet Cong also struck al the United States Army’s sprawling port facility to the north and at the largest fuel tank farm complex in Vietnam, south of the capital. The enemy also continued harassing shellings up and down the country, firing rockets and mortars into residential areas in the heart of Saigon and into several allied installations in the northern provinces, including the Da Nang and Chu Lai air bases. Three civilians were killed and 52 wounded, and 23 houses were destroyed by the shelling.
