Savage Club Anniversary
The Christchurch Savage Club started its seventy-fifth anniversary celebrations with an opening korero. The Great Chief (Mr W. Hamilton) welcomed those present, who included the Mayor (Sir George Manning), the president of the Kindred Clubs’ Association of New Zealand (Mr L. Askew, Masterton), the deputy president (Mr A. Rattray, Ashburton), Mr W. Mathison (Scottish Society), Mr C. S. Thomas (Caledonian Society) and members of the Dunedin Orphans’ Club and the Ashburton and South Canterbury Savage Clubs. Thirteen former club presidents attended.
The viee-prestdent (Mr D. A. Johnson) presented the elub’s new chain of office to Mr Hamilton. The chain shows the names of more than 70 presidents from 1893. The club orchestra, conducted by Mr M. Broun, gave selections. Items were also given by Messrs R. Allen (trombone solo), C. Leech (violin solo). H. Keane (humour), D. Foley (vocal solo), S. Chrisp (piano accordion), G. Russell and E. Cornwall (piano duet), Messrs S. McKnight, J. Luney and 1 Findlay (sketches).
