Report On Medical School
Sir,—The people of New Zealand will not be satisfied with Professor Christie’s report on the Otago Medical School. In view of the present serious shortage of doctors in New Zealand, what is called for is: (a) a Royal Commission to investigate all aspects of medical education in this country; (b) the feasibility of setting up a State medical service for those unable to pay medical fees of from 12s fid a visit to £5 ss. exclusive of the social security subsidy; (c) the possibility of setting up a flying doctor service to make life safe for back-country fanners, their wives, their children, their employees, and the rural teachers who must work in these areas; (d) whether Medical School staff should be permitted to spend half their time in private practice as at present, or should be required to devote all their time to teaching.—Yours, etc., HINEMOA. May 6, 1988.
