University Favourite Squash Contest Teams Even

In spite of the withdrawal of Timaru and Ashburton to the Southern Districts competition, the Canterbury Squash Rackets Association’s first division should still be interesting.

The five-team competition now appears to be more even, and there is less difference in the ability of players between the first and fourth team places than in the past.

P. Beadel. and J. F. Cotter are still strong contenders for the title.

J. G. Foulds will head Collegiate again, a position he took over from J. H. Pine in the middle of last season. Pine will continue to play at No. 2. D. G. Hamilton and a newcomer from Ergland, P. R. Sawtell, complete the team.

Last year Ashburton was usually assured of winning its first two matches with G. L. Bird and G. A. Davidson playing first and second but the other two players often offered only token resistance. University looks to have the strongest team in the competition which will begin at the High School Old Boys’ courts, in Bealey Avenue, dayThe University team will be led by the province’s two fop plavers, R. M. Garrett md J. F. Henderson. However, Garrett will travel overseas early in June. Supporting them will be I. Parsons, who played for New Zealand Universities ast year, and either D. A. Garrett or C. C. Kissling. At he time of his university selection Parsons impressed as a It, hard-driving player who should be able to beat many of Canterbury’s ranked men. The Officers' Club will field the same team that won the competition in 1963, now that H. S. Gair has left. Although ’heir average age is 41. D. J Triggs, M. R. Blank. G. C.

The Christchurch Club is providing two teams; last year it had three. Although it has lost R. M. Garrett, the teams look solid. The No. 1 team will be R. D. Monk, L. Williams, S. Suckling, and R. Taylor; and the No. 2 will comprise B. V. Hamilton, L. G. Milne, J. S. Crosbie and N. V. Herd. In the first round University will play Collegiate, and the two Christchurch teams will meet Officers Club has the bye.
