Checkers Again Leading

With only two games to play before the completion of the first round of women's indoor basketball, Checkers looks to have a strong hold on top honours for another season. Should this team win again, it will become the first to win the championship in four successive years. Results of last evenings games: Checkers 35, Rebels 6. University 19, Rangiora 18. Brighton, a bye. Checkers v. Rebels Checkers opened the scoring with a fine shot by P. Woodsworth. Good guarding by both sides kept the scoring low in the first half. Checkers led 10-2 at half-time. Play became scrappy in the second half until Checkers gained control to let the fastbreaking forwards, S. Rennell. D. Entwistle and I. Partridge, score freely. Checkers deserved to win. 35-6 University v. Rangiora For University, H. van Hoppen netted a goal early, but play became scrappy until the

tenth minute when B. Davies scored twice.

T. Kearney opened Rangiora's account with a shot under the basket and C. Reuben scored twice. At half-time University led 10-8.

Rangiora fought back and good goals by L. Rollinson and T. Chadderton gave the team confidence. C. Reuben fouled in the last minute allowing University to win, 19-18.
