Civil Defence
Sir, —The demonstration of the utter uselessness of the Christchurch civil defence scheme fully justifies my views, expressed from time to time over the last nine years, that the scheme was little better than a theoretical nonsense. The excuse that the scheme was not put into operation because the occasion was not an emergency is laughable. The real reason, 1 would suggest, is that if an emergency had been declared the farcical nature of the organisation would have been exposed in full. Surely it is time
that the civil defence hierarchy were moved on or civil defence closed down as a waste of time and money. The main trouble is that civil defence appointments have been used by the Government as an opportunity to provide jobs for the boys. Anyone who knew about civil defence was barred. A practical organisation could well have been in existence at least six years ago.—Yours, etc., THE WALRUS. April 14, 1968. [The Director of Civil Defence (Brigadier R. C. Queree) replies: “I do not wish to comment on this letter. It hardly calls for comment, nor is It worthy of same.”] [This correspondence is now closed. Ed., “The Press.”]
