And Factory
Firemen were called to two fires at a joinery factory in Vagues Road, Papanui, at the week-end and the building was destroyed by the second blaze. The damage to the building and contents is estimated at $6OOO. The factory was the property of Mr J. R. Williams, a building contractor, of 30 Silvester Street. About 9.20 pjn. on Saturday a young man living opposite the factory noticed the blaze, which started in the switchboard. Units from the St Albans and Harewood stations answered the call. Slight damage was done to the woodwork near the switchboard. At 10.55 a.m. yesterday engines from Harewood and St Albans stations were sent to the factory which was well alight when they arrived. A number of woodworking machines, including three saw-benches, two buzzers, a door press and a moulding machine, were destroyed. Mr Williams said the brigade made a fine save when the first fire broke out.
