Fires At Flat
Police are investigating three fires which occurred in a flat at 39 Springfield Road at the week-end. The flat is occupied by three men. Two of the occupants, Paul Brown, aged 25, and Samuel Polkington, aged 73, were overcome by smoke from the third fire and were taken by St John ambulance to the Christchurch Hospital where they were treated in the casualty department. The first fire occurred at 8.58 p.m. on Friday in a drawer under a cylinder cupboard in the lounge. At 12.11 a.m. on Saturday there was a fire in a clothes cupboard, sft away from the first fire. At 11.47 p.m. on Saturday the brigade was called to a fire in rolls of carpet and underfelt in the hall. Units from the Central and St Albans stations answered the calls. There are three flats on the property which is owned by Mr P. C. Kane, of 353 Hills Road.
