14 Tickets On Double
Holders of 14 50cent tickets received $456.80 for $1 when Skeltheen and Bigoted won the Canterbury Jockey Club’s oncourse double on Saturday. Master Leigh, which ran Bigoted to a long neck in the Yaldhurst Handicap, completed a concession double worth $38.10. Skeltheen mastered Lonvato close to home In an Interest-
Ing two-sided finish to the Peerswlck Hurdles. There was only half a neck between them at the end of a mile and threequarters, but they left the others straggling well behind on a heavy track. Lorastan weakened into a gap of seven lengths after making a short-lived bid for the lead going to the last flight. This was Skeltheen’s first win this season but he was successful as a hurdler last winter. W. C. Gye had Mr J. R. Dinnington's King’s Command gelding close to the pace after Lonvato displaced Taxman in the lead at the six furlongs. Gye kept Skeltheen to the inside for the final challenge, and it paid off inside the last 50 yards. Istan Light, the each way favourite, was a distant sixth. He was unable to rally after making a bad Jumn near the five furlongs. Royal Burgh, the third fav-
ourlte, weakened badly from a prominent position and was pulled up betore the last jump. He had had a recurrence of ligament trouble. Bigoted resisted a determined challenge from Master Leigh to win the Yaldhurst Handicap by a long neck. For a change the two South Island-based Skelton brothers played dominating roles tn the finish. M. Skelton, the youngest member of the quartet, was on the winner, and Master Leigh wae ridden by F. H. Skelton. Bigoted made his run from the middle of the field to get to the front beyond the furlong. Master Leigh was forced over a lot of ground In making his run around the field after being one of the slowest away. Cattegat was another to come from well back for third, just beatlhg Conciliation. The favourite. Anvil, ran moderately to finish eighth.
