Third Win To Jay Ribbon
Jay Ribbon completed a good treble for the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting by winning the Autumn Plate, one mile and a half, at Riccarton on Saturday.
Mr J. A. Wilson’s three-year-old finished doggedly for the apprentice, A. S. Borthwick, to win going away by threequarters of a length from Bellcara, a Southland hack having her only start at the meeting. Jay Ribbon's three wins at the meeting were worth $2780. A half-brother by Fountainhead to the well-performed Ray Ribbon, Jay Ribbon did his early racing in Auckland, but did not win until last winter, when he was successful at Washdyke at long odds Jay Ribbon was well back in the field after two furlongs in the Autumn Plate but was taken along with a steady run to be in the first half dozen on the home turn.
Bellcara looked very likely for a moment when she took a short lead going to the furlong, but she found Jay Ribbon’s challenge irresistible. Lady Velvet held third position in the final furlong, but was in a gap of four lengths. Fair Behaviour Improved several positions late in the race for fourth, beating Pretentious by a length and a half.
Capasco and Bellaware showed there was value in Easter hack form at Riverton by running first and third respectively in the Gimcrack Handicap. Capasco, a four-year-old Great Western gelding owned by Mr and Mrs W. D. Crooks, of Invercargill, showed marked ability in the conditions to win under the topweight of fist 101 b. He was one of the slowest away, and had to be taken wide on the home turn to make his challenge, but he won handily by three-quarters Of a length from Bellnote, which had practically outclassed the hack sprinters in the corresponding race on the first day of the C.J.C. autumn meeting.
Bellaware was third in a gap of five lengths, but far ahead of the others.
