Building Materials Production Fall
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 2L Production of main building materials fell in 1967—some from high points reached in 1966; others continuing trends started earlier, the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker) announced today.
Cement production fell from a peak of 864,000 tons in 1966 to 801,000 tons in 1967. This was considerably lower than 1965. Other production decreases included ready-mixed concrete, sawn timber, fibrous plaster and cornices. Production of bricks fell substantially. Bricks produced, including hollow blocks, totalled 49.9 m in 1967. In 1966, 56m bricks were produced, and 56.6 m in 1965. Mr Baker also said paints
and enamels were produced in smaller quantities last year than in 1966. With some companies having ceased production last year, the volume of plywood fell sharply after reaching a peak in 1966. The 43.6 m square feet produced in 1967 was the lowest since 1959.
