The official newspaper of the Otematata Welfare Association, the “Otematata Chronicle” will cease publication on May 2. The newspaper, started eight years ago to serve workers on the Benmore and Aviemore power projects and their families, has had almost 400 editions. Publication was weekly until last year, when curtailed activities of the welfare association as the Aviemore project neared completion forced a reduction to fortnightly issue. Though published mainly for the benefit of the construction township residents, the “Otematata Chronicle" has also circulated widely throughout the Waitaki Valley to residents of Omarama and Kurow, and to farmers. From a peak of 5000. the population of Otematata has fallen to. about 3000, and a continued decline is anticipated dunng the coming months, making publication of the newspaper uneconomical The welfare association hopes to launch another construction township newspaper when the proposed Twizel village is established in the Mackenzie Country within the next few years to service more hydro-electricity projects in the region.
